Deciding on the Best Burgers

by on Wednesday, November 28th, 2012

Like most of you, I grew up on McDonald’s hamburgers and fries. It was a regular thing for us to eat at McDonald’s on the weekend and also sometimes during the week the parents would go to the golden arches drive through and bring home sacks of 50 cent burgers and fries.

For some reason we never were fans of Burger King burgers. It was all about the golden arches until I graduated from high school and moved out. That’s when I discover Roy Rogers burgers, which were bought out by Hardees, so that was the end of those burger.

I like the Jack in the Box burgers now and the best local burger chain is called Backyard Burgers. They are a small chain and struggling, but their burgers are 100% Angus beef and the toppings are great. The newest menu addition is sweet potato fries – which are awesome. You have to pay a little extra for them over the regular fires in a combo, but they are really worth it.

Grilling Steaks

by on Thursday, May 17th, 2012

This new gas grill that I bought last year on the end of summer sale is coming in really handy lately. The grill works like a charm. since I bought it on clearance, it was already put together and I didn’t have to do anything but push it out to the parking lot and load it in my trunk.

Tonight I am grilling some pretty New York Strip steaks that i bought at the Kroger grocery store. The steaks are on sale this week and it was too good of a deal to pass up. I wish that fresh corn on the cob was in season. That would go really well with these steaks. But corn around here still needs a couple of weeks to be ready for picking.

Lunch at Hooters

by on Sunday, April 22nd, 2012

My buddy Owen wanted to meet up for lunch so I suggested Hooters. I like the atmosphere of the Hooters restaurants and the food is pretty good, too.  He didn’t  think twice – he agreed and we’ll be downtown at noon.

Noon is not the best time to go to lunch if you can avoid it, but some of us don’t have a choice. The restaurants are the busiest, so service is usually slow. But the food will be fresh and hot, and sometimes the crowd makes for good people watching and adds some buzz to the air.

The Hooters downtown is the best one. The girls are gorgeous and work the hardest of all the Hooters around town. The ones down in Antioch are probably the worst. I don’t see how that place even keeps its doors open any more. No one wants to see all the skinny crack hoes walking around in shorts in a daze. Half the time they don’t even get your order right and they could care less about checking back to see if you want another beer or need ketchup or anything. But downtown rocks and that’s where I’ll be in a few hours.

BBQ time

by on Tuesday, April 10th, 2012

I love that the weather has gotten so nice. BBQ season has come early this year and I am preparing for it as we speak. I have already filled the tanks for the grill and bought new cooking utensils for it as well. I dug out the smoker and cleaned it up. I have to pick up some wood chips for it, but that is easy. We are fixing up our patio and the backyard areas where we entertain and due to such good weather it will be blooming soon enough with flowers everywhere.

We will probably plan our first BBQ for next weekend. My wife has shopping to do as well as check everyone’s schedules to make sure they can attend. I am sure that it wont be a problem though, because everyone is ready for winter to be gone for good and the outdoor fun to begin. It is still just a bit too cool at night to bother with the pool yet. When the weather gets to the right point, we will open up the pool and ready it for summer. We haven’t decided if we want new patio furniture yet or not. I suppose we shall see. I am sure that my wife will come across something she likes soon enough.

Gulf oil spill

by on Sunday, March 11th, 2012

The oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico has had lasting damage in so many areas of life there. In 2010 Deepwater Horizon spewed billions of gallons of oil into the Gulf of Mexico and the clean up alone is still ongoing. However, scientists have become increasingly concerned by the deformed shrimp and fish with lesions. That does not bode well for our fishing industry at all. It will then trickle down to us whenever we shop for seafood or go to a seafood restaurant, because the prices will be going up for sure.

The Eco system in the gulf is at great risk now and we all know that our government is going to do their best to hush it up. I hope that at least one of the news channels will report the story and let the public know that this is happening. I fear that the online news stories are just not going to help the situation. I suppose though that we shall see what happens over the next few months. Only time will tell. In the mean time, I think I will stock my deep freezer with the regular seafood that we eat here at home. Shrimp and fish can be put up easily.
