Who Gets a New Car for Christmas?

by on Friday, December 28th, 2012

All month long we have been forced to watch car commercials suggesting that giving someone a brand new luxury car is the perfect Christmas gift. Now, I don’t know about you, but I don’t want to spend that kind of money on a fucking Christmas present, I don’t care how hot the bitch might be. I can see spending a couple grand on something like diamonds or a vacation to someplace exotic. But i’m not dropping fifty grand on a new car for a woman as a Christmas gift.

For another thing, I think that is kind of cheesy. You should buy a car because you need a car and its time to buy a new one, regardless of whether it is Christmas or anniversary or whatever. Buying a car should be for the sake of buying a car. Giving a gift should be something unrelated to a basic necessity like daily transportation.

Do you know anyone who gave a car or got a car as a Christmas gift – ever? I would really like to know how many people think that is OK and actually do it.

Deciding on the Best Burgers

by on Wednesday, November 28th, 2012

Like most of you, I grew up on McDonald’s hamburgers and fries. It was a regular thing for us to eat at McDonald’s on the weekend and also sometimes during the week the parents would go to the golden arches drive through and bring home sacks of 50 cent burgers and fries.

For some reason we never were fans of Burger King burgers. It was all about the golden arches until I graduated from high school and moved out. That’s when I discover Roy Rogers burgers, which were bought out by Hardees, so that was the end of those burger.

I like the Jack in the Box burgers now and the best local burger chain is called Backyard Burgers. They are a small chain and struggling, but their burgers are 100% Angus beef and the toppings are great. The newest menu addition is sweet potato fries – which are awesome. You have to pay a little extra for them over the regular fires in a combo, but they are really worth it.

Old Shoeboxes

by on Saturday, September 1st, 2012

This is a habit that I got from my mom. I cannot bear to throw away shoeboxes. I buy a new pair of shoes or boots and toss them in the floor of the closet. So then I have the dilemma of an empty shoebox. I should throw it out but I feel this overwhelming guilt as a little voice in my head – in my mother’s voice – says, “That’s a perfectly good box! Don’t throw that away!”

So I have a collection of empty shoeboxes on the top shelf of my closet. I have not idea what I will ever want to put in them – certainly not my old shoes. But they are perfectly good boxes.

I almost wish the store would just keep the shoeboxes at the store – like they already keep the clothes hangers when you buy new shirts or pants. If they keep the shoebox then storing it or re-using it is on them and not on me. I’d be fine with taking a new pair of shoes home in a plain plastic bag – or better yet, wearing them.

BBQ time

by on Tuesday, April 10th, 2012

I love that the weather has gotten so nice. BBQ season has come early this year and I am preparing for it as we speak. I have already filled the tanks for the grill and bought new cooking utensils for it as well. I dug out the smoker and cleaned it up. I have to pick up some wood chips for it, but that is easy. We are fixing up our patio and the backyard areas where we entertain and due to such good weather it will be blooming soon enough with flowers everywhere.

We will probably plan our first BBQ for next weekend. My wife has shopping to do as well as check everyone’s schedules to make sure they can attend. I am sure that it wont be a problem though, because everyone is ready for winter to be gone for good and the outdoor fun to begin. It is still just a bit too cool at night to bother with the pool yet. When the weather gets to the right point, we will open up the pool and ready it for summer. We haven’t decided if we want new patio furniture yet or not. I suppose we shall see. I am sure that my wife will come across something she likes soon enough.

I have noticed a decided lack of respect by kids today towards their elders. This really bothers me. It is as if they have no respect for themselves let alone anyone else, but they treat adults as if they have nothing but contempt for them and that is wrong. I was raised to show respect for my elders and that is what my children will be taught as well. However, you cannot control what kids learn in the schools now a days and that in itself bothers me. I am glad that my wife does not have to work, because we have spoken frequently about raising children and how we would accomplish that.

We want to be successful in our child rearing efforts, not only for our sake but more for the kids. Child rearing can be difficult and it is possible that we will home school to ensure that our children do┬ánot┬áreceive unwanted influences in their lives. It is a difficult decision though, for children need contact with other kids and finding the kind of atmosphere we wish them to participate in. We can only do our best, but since we haven’t any children yet it is not a big worry. I suppose we will deal with that as it comes later one.
