Jellyfish

by on Tuesday, May 31st, 2011

The long, hot Memorial Day weekend was ruined for most of the Atlantic Coast beaches in Florida because of jellyfish. The news reported that over 800 people were stung and sought medical treatment in just one day due to jellyfish stings.

The type of jellyfish that washed in from the Atlantic Ocean were called “mauve stingers,” and appeared to be about the size of a baseball with long tentacles that sting unwary swimmers. These are different from the Man o’War jellyfish and the ones they call “cannonball” jellyfish. I wonder what caused such a large swarm to appear this particular weekend?

Pick Your Poison

by on Tuesday, May 24th, 2011

Something that my mom used to say when we kids were clamoring for something that she was offering, like a snack tray or a box of chocolates, was that we would each get a turn. When it was our turn, she put the tray or box in front of each of us and told us, one by one, to “pick your poison.”

I had to look up that phrase to see if it was from a movie or song lyrics, but from what I can tell it came about during Prohibition and meant which alcoholic drink would you prefer?

Fish Tank

by on Saturday, May 14th, 2011

The vet office has a huge aquarium in the waiting room and I really don’t mind spending much time waiting if I can watch the fish swimming. There is something just fascinating about watching fish swim around. It soothes me and fills me with a sense of awe. Even though the fish are relatively ugly – the breeds that he chose are weird, grotesque and not colorful like a tropical aquarium. But they are delightful to watch for 5 or 10 minutes until the vet is ready for my dog.

Cut the Head off of the Snake

by on Monday, May 2nd, 2011

The way to kill a snake has long been told in fables and throughout history you have to cut off its head. That is the analogy for fighting battles and winning wars – you can churn through soldiers, but until you got the men in command they will continue to fight.

Last night, President Obama came on late night TV with a special announcement that the world’s world terrorist, Osama Bin Laden, has been killed by a team of Navy Seals who surrounded a compound in Pakistan, endured a firefight and killed Bin Laden.

That is quite a victory for America and the world who have been subjected to his vicious attacks against innocent people in major cities and on airplanes. I am glad that they have cut off the head of this snake, but I am angry that he was found in Pakistan.
